Mox Nix Textiles
Hemming

JainFor over twenty years Jain Faries has been using historically accurate tools, techniques and materials to hand weave reproductions of colonial Overshot or Floatwork textiles. Jain learned to weave Floatwork in Virginia in the 70’s and works on five rising shed Jack looms of differing sizes.

Popular between 1750 and the American Civil war, Floatwork fits comfortably into both the traditional and the modern home. Woven from cotton and wool dyed and spun in the US, all the pieces are pre-washed and hand hemmed. Each piece is woven individually with its own hems, rather than being cut and sewn from yardage. In addition to their inherent beauty, the table pieces are useful in protecting fine surfaces from damage by redware, pewter, glass and other smalls. Her pieces are a good fit with both antique and reproduction traditional furniture.

Jain’s work has been chosen for Early American Life’s Directory of American Craftsmen a dozen times and featured in an article about Floatwork, as well as appearing on the cover twice. A number of museum shops and historic sites carry her work.
