Mox Nix Textiles

FAQ

Q: How long does it take you to weave that?
A:  A coverlet takes about  a week, a throw two days. I can weave four table runners and two or three table squares in a day.  These times represent actual weaving time, which is the fast and fun part.  Setting up the loom (winding the warp and tying on) and finishing (fulling the fabric and hand hemming ) can add half again the time to a piece.  It takes the best part of a day to match of the center seams and hand stitch the two sections of a coverlet  and hem it.  Please refer to the “Thread Head” page of this web site for the boring details of warping and finishing.

Q: Are all the colors you use traditional?

A: We don’t use the purples, pinks, oranges and poison greens we have seen in some old pieces but we have seen every color we use somewhere.  Since overshot was often a home product, we see any color that could be produced by vegetal or chemical dyes.  Indigo is very common because it was both cheap and easily available from the mid 1600's on.

Q: How do I clean a piece of woven cloth?

A: All pieces are preshrunk in hot water.  Dry clean or hand wash in warm water with mild soap and dry flat.

Q: Where did the name Mox Nix come from?

A: I stole the name from some friends who used Mox Nix for a silk screen printing company.  It is a phonetic spelling of a German phrase meaning “makes nothing” in the sense of “no problem” or “whatever”
